He Gave Himself

He Gave Himself blog
Before the fall of man

God had a perfect plan,
To fellowship with us was His desire.
But Adam disobeyed,
To sin became a slave,
Now a perfect sacrifice would be required.

An offering must be made,
The sin debt must be payed,
So God and man could reconciled be.
So Jesus said, “I’ll go,”
Because He loved me so,
He shed His blood and paid sin’s penalty.

He gave Himself to pay a debt I could not pay.
When I was lost, He gave Himself to be my way.
Though I deserved to be upon the cross that day,
In love He took my place, and gave Himself.

No greater love is known,
No greater love is shown,
Than when one lays His life down for a friend,
But Jesus died for me
When I was His enemy.
A love like this I cannot comprehend.

He gave Himself to pay a debt I could not pay.
When I was lost, He gave Himself to be my way.
Though I deserved to be upon the cross that day,
In love He took my place, and gave Himself.

My nails were in His hands,
My crown of thorns He wore,
My stripes were on His back,
My heavy cross He bore.
And when God turned His back
He turned it on my sin,
Jesus won a victory that I could never win!

He gave Himself to pay a debt I could not pay.
When I was lost, He gave Himself to be my way.
Though I deserved to be upon the cross that day,
In love He took my place, and gave Himself.

Wonderful, meaningful song. Unfortunately I can’t find guitar chords easy enough for me to play. Like, maybe in C. Any ideas where to find it?

    • Niki Lott says:

I am sorry I don’t currently have the chord sheet available in that key. I will try to work on that!

      • Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ! I wish just to say God bless you. You are gifted to. I just love music but music doesn’t love me. (just saying) I am not good in singing but I will sing. I respect many composers like you. If you don’t mind, I am praying for some good Christian music copies( or record) with chords. I wish to have it.

Well very inspiring word, a lyrics of a song.

  3. Triz Duarte says:

Is there piano sheet music for this song?

  4. David Cloninger says:

I participate in a weekend called Presbyterian Pilgrimage. Someone has requested our group sing this song and we usually display the lyrics via projector. We have a CCLI license, but this song is not available. Can you give me permission to display the lyrics or is there a way I can affordably acquire them?
